Vitamin D3 is an important nutrient for many functions, potentially even your sexual health. Learn about the Vitamin D3 and ED connection including how much to take.
If you are dealing with erectile dysfunction, you probably want to help remedy the situation immediately. You may even be looking into supplements that might help with the issue.
And, while tinkering with supplementation may not always deliver good results, when it comes to Vitamin D and ED, there may be a good pairing here.
Below, we will cover if there is a connection between low Vitamin D levels and ED, what role Vitamin D plays in healthy erectile functioning, if increasing your Vitamin D levels might improve your ED symptoms, and what the Vitamin D3 dosage might be for men with ED and low Vitamin D.
Data have shown that there is a connection between low Vitamin D levels and ED.
Men with low Vitamin D levels are more likely to report ED issues as compared to men with Vitamin D levels that are in a healthy range.
It is important to keep your body’s Vitamin D levels in a normal range for a variety of very important functions including your immune system, your hormones, your heart health, your vascular function, and, yes, even your erectile function.
The full mechanism of how connected Vitamin D is to erectile function may not be fully elucidated yet, but we do know a few factors where they intertwine.
Vitamin D may increase the bioavailability of Nitric Oxide (NO), a potent vasodilator important for the increased blood flow during erections. In contrast, low Vitamin D levels may usher in vascular dysfunction, throwing a wrench into fast and healthy blood flow to the penile area.
Finally, there may also be a connection between Vitamin D supplementation and increased Testosterone blood levels in middle-aged men. Keeping Testosterone levels up in middle age can help improve libido and sexual functioning in men.
Some studies have shown that adding Vitamin D supplements to your ED treatment regimen may be a good idea.
One study looked into 111 men who had both low Vitamin D levels and also erectile dysfunction. They were divided into 2 groups, the first group took 5mg of Tadalafil (generic Cialis, an ED medication) once daily, and the second group took 5mg of Tadalafil once daily along with 4,000 IU of Vitamin D once daily. At the end of the study, the Vitamin D levels were significantly improved in the Vitamin D treatment group, but remained unchanged in the group that did not take supplemental ED. Also, while both groups reported significant improvements in erectile function, orgasmic function, sexual desire, sexual satisfaction, and overall satisfaction, the group taking both the Tadalafil and Vitamin D had significantly higher scores in the erectile function and sexual desire scores as compared to the Tadalafil-only group.
There is currently no set dosage that men need to take when they have both low Vitamin D levels and erectile dysfunction. This is because not everyone will have the same level of deficiency, making a blanket dose and treatment duration difficult to nail down.
Your doctor will be able to run blood tests to measure for a Vitamin D deficiency and then recommend a dosage that fits the best for you.
In the study above, the men were asked to take 4,000 IU once daily. While this may be a good dosage to help correct a deficiency for a little while, this dosage might be lowered once healthy levels have been hit and you are just maintaining your Vitamin D level.
It is normal to see people using somewhere between 600 IU - 2,000 IU daily as a maintenance dosage of Vitamin D3.
If you have ED and also low Vitamin D levels, it is absolutely a good idea to take steps to help correct the Vitamin D deficiency for your general health.
Will correcting your Vitamin D deficiency help with your ED symptoms? Maybe, maybe not. But. you should not count on correcting your Vitamin D levels to magically reverse any and all ED symptoms. However, with all the other health benefits to be had for maintaining healthy Vitamin D levels, correcting a deficiency is a no-brainer.
Will supplement with Vitamin D help with ED symptoms if you do not currently have a deficiency? There is no data showing that supplementing with Vitamin D in the case of already having normal levels improves ED. And, since Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, you can get too much and cause issues from your levels being too high.
If you have a Vitamin D deficiency, talk with your doctor about a treatment plan for getting your levels up to normal, and then what maintenance dose you should remain on afterward.
The study above shows that medications like Tadalafil can help out with ED symptoms for most men, and that in the case of a Vitamin D deficiency, adding in a Vitamin D supplement to the mix may make your results even better.
