Viagra (Sildenafil) and Alcohol: What Happens if Used Together?

Read on

Alcohol is a common way to enhance a romantic night whether via a nice glass of wine staying in or a sexy cocktail out.

But, there are a lot of questions about Viagra (Sildenafil) and alcohol and if the two substances can be used together.

There are a few different angles to consider when thinking about the combination of the two, and in this article, we will go over the available information to try to come to a conclusion.

Alcohol and ED

One of the things to consider about alcohol is that when consumed in large amounts alcohol may make it harder than usual to get an erection.

And over-consumption of alcohol on a regular basis can even be one of the causes of ED.

So, considering that you are taking Viagra (or its generic form Sildenafil) to try and have a beneficial effect on your sexual performance, you should avoid large amounts of alcohol on the basis of not counteracting what the Viagra is trying to achieve.

Blood Pressure Changes

One potential interaction of taking Viagra with alcohol is that both of them can reduce your blood pressure moderately. If this combination of blood pressure reduction is too much for you or you are sensitive to reductions in blood pressure, you may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, flushing, headache, or heart palpitations.

The Viagra package insert does not say to avoid alcohol, but it does have a section citing a study done where men were given generic Viagra 50mg and enough alcohol for blood alcohol levels of 0.08%. (0.08% is about 3 drinks in a 150-pound man.)

The package insert reports that “sildenafil did not potentiate the hypotensive effect of alcohol in healthy volunteers.”

This suggests that moderate amounts of alcohol may not have a strong enough effect to cause problems in healthy imbibers.

Another study gave men Sildenafil and a whole 750ml bottle of red wine together, or just one of the two, and then measured their blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac index.

Researchers found that red wine eventually leads to a decrease in arterial pressure by about 7%, and Sildenafil also leads to a decrease in arterial pressure by about 7%, but concluded that there was no clinically important interaction between Sildenafil and alcohol.

Conclusion

There are not a lot of studies done on the combination of Viagra and alcohol, so more data is needed before a strong conclusion can be reached.

Large amounts of alcohol should be avoided on the nights that you are planning on taking Viagra to make sure there are no blood pressure dropping interactions as well as making sure the alcohol does not affect your sexual performance.

But, based on the current studies, it appears that low to moderate amounts of alcohol should be safe to include on your romantic night if you are a pretty healthy person to begin with.

However, if you are sensitive to even moderate drops in blood pressure, then it would be appropriate to play it safe and forego that glass of wine on the nights that you are going to be taking Viagra.
