What are the details and steps for getting a Semaglutide medication compounded at a compounding pharmacy? Learn more here.
Semaglutide medications have been all the rage recently, specifically for their ability to aid in weight loss efforts.
With so many people wanting to get their hands on these medications, the supply has not been able to keep up and Semaglutide medications like Wegovy and Ozempic have found themselves onto the FDA’s Drug Shortages List.
While these medications are listed on this list, compounding pharmacies are allowed to make these medications according to a written prescription to help people get access to their prescribed medications.
But, before you buy compounded Semaglutide products, it is important to know a few things to make sure you are choosing a good source.
Step one of getting compounded Semaglutide is making sure that you have a prescription for the compounded medication. Semaglutide is always a prescription-only medication. So, beware of any place claiming to sell Semaglutide medications without one.
You may be able to get a compounded Semaglutide prescription from a doctor in person, or work with telehealth doctors to see if you are a good candidate for a Semaglutide compound prescription.
Step two of getting a compounded Semaglutide medication may seem obvious, but it is making sure that you are working with a compounding pharmacy.
Compounding pharmacies are held to strict standards, and will only make up a medication if you have a legal prescription for it from a doctor. If you come across a source claiming to be selling a compounded Semaglutide medication, but they are not a pharmacy, or do not require a prescription – do not trust this source.
Compounding pharmacies can be found in most areas, and some even work with online telemedicine companies (such as us here at Strut Health).
Another thing to keep in mind is that there are two types of compounding pharmacies when it comes to the kinds of medications they can make. There are sterile compounding pharmacies and non-sterile compounding pharmacies, although some compounding pharmacies make both sterile and non-sterile medications. In order to be a sterile compounding pharmacy, you need to have a special sterile lab setup to make injectable medications safely.
Since most Semaglutide medications are injectable, it will be a sterile compounding pharmacy that will need to make this up for you. If you aren’t sure if a compounding pharmacy has the ability to make sterile medications, you can simply ask them.
Something else to be on the lookout for if you are wanting to buy compound Semaglutide medications is making sure that pharmacies are not using the salt form of the medication. Different salt forms of medications mean that they are not chemically identical to the non-salt form (they are attached to an extra salt). And, the FDA has warned against the use of these medications, saying they may not be safe or effective.
When working with a compounding pharmacy, you should be able to ask if they use the salt form of Semaglutide, or if it is chemically identical to the Ozempic or Wegovy medications (the non-salt form). If they aren’t sure, or can’t answer the question confidently, this is a red flag.
Here at Strut Health, we work with U.S. licensed doctors and sterile and non-sterile compounding pharmacies to deliver compounded medications you can trust.
Our Semaglutide medications do not use the salt form, and we offer oral lozenges as well as injection options.
