Can Walking for 30 Minutes Daily Reduce Your Risk of Erectile Dysfunction?

Read on

Many men experience erectile dysfunction as they get older, and they may see erectile issues as an inevitable part of the aging process. However, some studies may challenge the idea that there is little within your control to improve your erectile function or avoid ED symptoms altogether. And, it may only take as little as 30 minutes per day to reap these romance rewards.

New information indicates that regular physical activity may improve already existing erectile dysfunction symptoms, or, even prevent them from developing as you age if you start on a regimen early.

Below, we will explain the details within these studies, delve into just what physical activity and ED have to do with one another, and give you our take on ED and physical activities like walking.

What the studies way about physical activity and erectile dysfunction:

One Harvard study reported that men who engaged in walking for 30 minutes a day had a 41% reduced risk of erectile dysfunction as compared to inactive men.

A prospective study from 2000 looked into the risk factors associated with the development of erectile dysfunction over a 14-year period in just over 22,000 men. One of the factors that was associated with a lower risk of developing ED overtime was physical activity, with a relative risk (RR) of 0.7. This means that, in this study, men who were physically active had only 70% of the risk of developing ED as they got older as compared to men who were not considered physically active.

Another study looked into the effects of physical activity and ED in men who had a previous heart attack. After assessing if the men were healthy enough for regular physical activity by a 6-minute walk test, they were divided into one group that would follow a home-based walking regimen, and another group that was not instructed to include a structured walking program into their day. The trial period started just after their discharge from the hospital and ended 30 days later, and all participants reported ED function by taking a questionnaire at the beginning and end of the study. At the end of 30 days, the non-walking group reported worsening ED symptoms by 9% as compared to baseline, while the walking group had a 71% decrease in ED symptoms as compared to the baseline reporting.

What does exercise have to do with ED?

Healthy erectile function is all about healthy blood flow. And, one of the best steps that you can take to improve your blood flow is a regular cardiovascular exercise regimen.

The small vessels which help send blood to the corpus cavernosum in the penis to achieve an erection are so tiny, that issues in the bedroom may often be the first signs of trouble in your vessels as a whole.

Exercise helps with overall erectile function by improving whole-body blood flow, reducing plaque formation on the walls of the vessels, and reducing the risk of developing or worsening cardiovascular disease.

Regular cardiovascular exercise also helps out in the bedroom by increasing your body’s production of nitric oxide (NO), which is a potent chemical messenger that your body uses during erections to dilate your vessels correctly.

Walking for ED: bottom line

Current studies indicate that walking for as little as 30 minutes a day can be a great way to improve your erectile dysfunction symptoms or even help keep ED at bay as you grow older.

With the ease of integrating a short walk into your day, a regular cardiovascular exercise regimen can be a great thing to integrate into your erectile dysfunction treatment (or prevention) plan.

While walking is often used as the exercise of choice in these studies, other cardiovascular exercises that appeal to you like jogging, swimming, tennis, circuit training, an interval workout, group exercise classes, or other cardiovascular activities are likely to provide similar benefits. So, choose one that appeals to you, or switch it up every couple of weeks to keep things interesting!

Always be sure to speak with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine to make sure it is a good fit for you and that you are healthy enough for activity.
