ShotFree Allergy is an online resource to connect you with doctors and specialty pharmacies for topical allergy treatments. Transdermal Immunotherapy (TdIT) is an allergy immunotherapy treatment developed by pharmacists by using the same ingredients used by allergists when creating allergy shots or drops. With TdIT, a cream base pulls the allergen through the skin, exposing your body to the allergen in a more natural way – without needles. These allergen creams are made in controlled pharmacy environments.
Transdermal Immunotherapy (TdIT) can be used in adults and children who are 6 years of age or older. If you suffer from mild to moderate seasonal, environmental, or pet allergies, you may be a good candidate for TdIT. You will be asked to fill out an online telehealth questionnaire to make sure that you are a good candidate for this therapy.
Transdermal allergy creams can be used to treat environmental allergies (perennial allergies, dust mites, molds, mice, insects), seasonal allergies (pollen from trees, grasses, weeds), as well as pet allergies (cats, dogs).
While TdIT is similar to shots and drops in that it targets the root cause of allergies by slowly ramping up allergen concentrations of natural allergen extracts, they differ in many ways. TdIT can often be cheaper per month than allergy shots or drops. Transdermal Immunotherapy creams can also be self-applied at home, without the need to visit a doctor's office for injections.
The most common side effects of TdIT include redness, itching, or rash at the application site. Other side effects that may be noted include a temporary increase in allergy symptoms, and the potential for systemic anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is when you have a severe allergic reaction and the immune system is overreacting to an allergen. Anaphylaxis can be dangerous and life-threatening if not treated properly. If you are experiencing anaphylaxis, you need immediate medical attention and an immediate injection of epinephrine (epi-pen). You need to visit the emergency room to ensure proper treatment to avoid a second reaction (biphasic anaphylactic reaction).
