Whether your barber took a little too much off the top, you want to attempt a man-bun, or you are starting on a hair loss treatment and want to enhance your hair growth, there may be ways to optimize your overall hair growth rates.

Below, we will cover 8 steps that you can take in your everyday life to help maximize the growth rates that your follicles are capable of.

Not all of these tips will work for everyone, but, picking out a few that seem to fit with your lifestyle and hair goals might help you see the growth you are hoping to achieve or help you identify holes in your current hair care regimen.

1. Massage your scalp

While it may seem like this tip is too good to be true (who doesn’t like a scalp massage?), scalp massages for a few minutes every day may help increase follicle blood flow and lead to healthy hair growth over time.

Grab one of those strange spider-looking head massagers and take it to your scalp for a few minutes before bed, ask your partner for a scalp massage, or take a little extra time in the shower massaging the scalp when your are washing and conditioning.

2. Eat a healthy nutrient-dense diet

Your hair can’t grow at its optimal rate if it is not given the building blocks to make your hair. This includes plenty of protein, iron, and even vitamin D.

Focus on a well-rounded diet full of vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins to give your hair follicles what they need to produce hair as fast as they can.

If you struggle with maintaining a balanced diet daily, you may be able to add in a hair skin and nail supplement or multivitamin to help cover all of your hair’s needs.

3. Try a hair skin and nails vitamin

Hair skin and nails vitamins tend to be formulated just for healthy hair growth, they know that you are aiming for healthy hair skin and nails, so they add in extra ingredients for just that reason.

These will often contain more biotin than a regular multivitamin, trace hair health ingredients like selenium, and maybe additional hair health ingredients like collagen or omega 3s.

Of course, it is always best to try and get all of your nutrition from food. But if your daily diet is sometimes lacking in the nutritional category, there is likely no downside to mixing in a daily hair skin and nail multi as well. Always run new additions to your supplement regimen by your doctor or pharmacist, as even supplements may sometimes not pair up well with your current medications or conditions.

4. Shampoo and condition regularly

This is a tricky one to master sometimes, but it is important to figure out a wash and conditioning regimen that works well for your hair.

Both overwashing or under washing can take a toll on your scalp and hair health, so finding your sweet spot can help your hair be the healthiest it can be.

Washing too often can strip too many of the oils off of your hair and scalp, leaving it dry, irritated, or prone to breakage. But, washing too little can cause a buildup of oil and products on your scalp, resulting in redness, irritation, inflammation, or a flare-up of scalp skin conditions. Neither of these extremes leads to optimal hair growth.

Instead, start with washing and conditioning every other day, and adjust from there as needed. People with more oily scalps or that use a lot of products may need to wash more, and those prone to scalp dryness and brittle hair may be able to stretch it further.

Also, men should always follow a wash with a conditioner, as just a shampoo won’t cut it when it comes to healthy hair and may leave your scalp and hair too dry. Replace some of those nourishing oils and moisturizers with a good conditioner focused on the lengths and ends of your hair.

5. Prioritize the health of your scalp

Your hair follicles are embedded in your scalp, so if the health of your scalp is not optimal, they may not grow hair as fast as possible.

Common conditions that can negatively affect the health of your hair follicles include dandruff, psoriasis, and eczema. So, taking care of these conditions quickly when they arise can help get your scalp back to better health and your hair growing in healthily.

Ignoring scalp conditions and allowing them to progress can also damage hair follicles over time and may lead to slower growth or increased shedding.

6. Keep hair coloring and heat styling to a minimum

Coloring, bleaching, and heat styling your hair may be fun and let you have fun with changing hair looks, but if they are done too often, they may reduce the overall health of your hair.

Having fun with colors and heat styling once in a while is unlikely to have a huge impact on your hair health, but done regularly you may experience dry, brittle hair, or an irritated scalp with slower growth.

If you are going to go for a color change or bleach, always get the hair treatment done professionally to help limit the damage.

7. Try using a topical  Minoxidil product

Topical Minoxidil is one of the only 2 FDA-approved medications for male pattern hair loss. You may recognize Minoxidil as the active ingredient inside of Rogaine formulations, but it can also be found in generic forms, or inside of combination hair growth products like our topical Finasteride and Dutasteride formulas.

The exact mechanism behind how Minoxidil can improve hair growth is not fully understood. But, we do know that it is a vasodilator that helps to improve blood flow to the scalp.

8. Talk to your doctor if you’ve noticed slowed growth

Talking to your doctor at the first sign of slowed growth is the best way to stay on top of what is happening to your hair.

Slowed growth may be the first sign of hair changes from genetic and hormonal causes like male pattern hair loss, it can be the result of a stressful time in your life, or it may even be related to medications or underlying health conditions. Your doctor can help you get to the root of what could be happening, and may be able to prescribe medications to help preserve the hair you currently have.
