Dr. Bauman explains why Ketoconazole (Nizoral) shampoos may be a good addition to your hair loss treatment plan.
(Video Transcript)
Hey everybody, it’s Dr. Alan Bauman from Bauman Medical Hair Transplant and Hair Loss Treatment Center today coming to you on behalf of Strut.
And, if you’re dealing with hair loss, you may want to try the tried and true hair restoration treatments like Finasteride and Minoxidil. But, you also may want to add some other things into your regimen that have some good benefit or potentially some benefit.
And, this may include hair growth shampoo, a medicated shampoo like Nizoral or Ketoconazole.
We’re going to go over the reasons why you may want to use Ketoconazole, how does it work, where you can get it, and the best way to apply it to get the best results from this medicated shampoo. So stay tuned!
So, what is Nizoral?
Nizoral is a medicated shampoo that contains Ketoconazole, a drug, a synthetic antifungal agent.
It’s commonly used in dandruff and irritated scalp.
It may have anti-inflammatory properties, we know it also has anti-androgen properties, so perhaps a DHT-inhibiting effect.
And, it also is a very, very deep cleanser of the scalp.
And, today we’ll talk about how Nizoral or Ketoconazole might help with hair loss and how it might be a great part of your hair restoration regimen.
So again, as an antifungal treatment, it can clear up seborrheic dermatitis, or fungal infections of the scalp, irritation, flaking, dandruff. And it’s commonly used as a medicated shampoo for that.
It comes also in two strengths by the way. There’s an over-the-counter 1% and there’s also a prescription 2% version as well.
It also contains, as I mentioned previously, Ketoconazole which is an anti-androgen agent, which might block or inhibit DHT production, the main trigger for male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss.
In some clinical trials, Ketoconazole topically has triggered increased hair growth, decreased inflammation, and it does that through lengthening the anagen growing phase of the hair follicle.
So, where can you get Nizoral or Ketoconazole shampoo?
Well, there is an over-the-counter version as I mentioned previously, the 1% version. And, there’s also a 2% medicated version which requires a prescription.
In general, the consensus is that the 2% version might work better for your hair loss situation.
So, how do we use nizoral or Ketoconazole shampoo?
Most studies recommend 3-4 times a week on the scalp during the time when you’re trying to treat dandruff or other irritation of the scalp.
What many of my patients find is that this treatment, the Ketoconazole shampoo, and that I’ve found personally is that it’s very, very drying to the hair and scalp. Almost makes your hair feel like hay.
So, if you’re dealing with that situation, you may want to employ a deeper conditioner or even an oil treatment to your hair to really condition it and to make it behave a little bit better, and to help you with your hair styling.
If you do encounter that and you’re having trouble with hair condition and texture and style, then you’re gonna have to decrease the usage of the Ketoconazole shampoo to maybe as little as once a week.
Using Ketoconazole or Nizoral shampoo is super simple. You want to wet your hair and scalp and apply the shampoo directly to the scalp and form a nice lather right at the level of the scalp, and let it sit on there for several minutes at a time before rinsing it off.
Always follow with a deep conditioning treatment due to the dryness effect that we mentioned previously.
In my opinion, you should always combine a medicated shampoo with another type of hair restoration regimen, whether it be Finasteride, or Minoxidil, or laser light therapy, or some other hair regrowth treatment.
Because getting enough DHT blockade from Nizoral or Ketoconazole alone is probably not enough for most hair loss patients.
And, if you’re having trouble with the styling, you definitely want to rotate your Ketoconazole or Nizoral shampoo with another type of more cosmetically friendly shampoo and condition repair.
In summary, I think it’s a good idea to use a medicated shampoo or another shampoo that has active ingredients to help you fight the hair loss process.
But remember, keep the regimen broad, use a multi-therapy approach.
