Dr. Bauman explains why testosterone can amplify hair loss in this interesting 2-minute video (with transcript).
(Video Transcript)
Hey everybody, It’s Dr. Alan Bauman from Bauman Medical Hair Transplant and Hair Loss Treatment Center coming to you today on behalf of Strut.
And, we’re going to answer the question today: “Does testosterone cause hair loss?”.
Well, we know, in the body, testosterone gets converted to DHT, dihydrotestosterone. And DHT, the metabolite of testosterone, we know for sure is the primary trigger for male pattern hair loss (and some female pattern hair loss, by the way).
And so what is testosterone or DHT doing to the hair follicle?
Well, DHT is causing the follicles to miniaturize over time, so you get that natural recession of the hairline, thinning in the crown, and it can get worse over time.
If you are doing something to raise your level of testosterone, that could be resistance training or hormone optimization therapy, you might be at risk for accelerated hair loss as your testosterone levels go up a little bit, more gets converted to DHT, dihydrotestosterone, which could accelerate that miniaturization over time.
In the clinic, we’ve seen a lot of patients who are doing resistance training or hormone optimization who have had accelerated male pattern or even female pattern hair loss, and we have to treat those.
So, how do we treat male pattern hair loss? Well, one of the common, most popular FDA-approved treatments is finasteride, the old Propecia, which inhibits the production of DHT in the body.
And, finasteride was originally FDA-approved as an oral medication. Today, through compounding pharmacies like Strut, we can apply finasteride topically directly to the scalp to inhibit that DHT production, hopefully protecting those hair follicles over time.
So, if you think you’ve got male pattern hair loss, or you’re a female on hormone optimization therapy, or you’re doing something to increase your natural testosterone level, the good news is that there’s a lot we can do.
There are anti-androgen therapies, like finasteride. There are also some nutraceutical products as well that target that DHT trigger for male pattern and female pattern hair loss.
But, if you have this issue, you think you might have male or female pattern hair loss due to DHT, dihydrotestosterone, then reach out to your Strut physician today, get some more information.
The good news: we have treatments that can help.
