Dr. Bauman explains why you may experience hair loss from using weight loss medications like semaglutide.
(Video Transcript)
Hey everybody! It’s Dr. Alan Bauman from Bauman Medical Hair Transplant and Hair Loss Treatment Center coming to you today on behalf of Strut.
And, we want to make you aware of this really important trend that we’re seeing in the practice in terms of hair loss and it’s the relationship between Ozempic, the skinny shot, and hair loss.
And, there’s been a lot of talk in the news – is the skinny shot causing hair loss? Is Ozempic causing hair loss? What’s going on here? And, what can we do about it?
So, stay tuned, I’m going to share some information with you.
So, one of the new trends that’s escaped Hollywood these days is the use of Ozempic for weight loss.
And, it’s an off-label treatment using semaglutide injections that can decrease hunger, slow down your metabolism, slow down your digestive tract, and basically help with diabetes. That’s really the main FDA-approved version of Ozempic ad semaglutide. But, they’ve also noticed that you can lose weight.
One of the things that we’re hearing about in the news and also seeing in the clinic is that many Ozempic patients are having side effects that include significant weight loss, including hollowing of the face, but more importantly for our discussion today, hair loss.
And so, how could this be happening? In the clinical trials, they say that Ozempic is not triggering the hair loss directly.
But, what we believe is happening, here at the level of the clinic, is that because weight loss is occurring, there’s a deficit of nutrients and fuel, that the highly metabolic cell population of the hair follicle is being affected, and it can be triggering some shedding and some hair loss.
And, what we’ve been seeing is that Ozempic-related hair loss can exacerbate male and female pattern hair loss and can also trigger other significant shedding phases.
This is not surprising. We’ve seen for many, many years special diets, especially restrictive diets, where weight loss occurs, you can have a nutrient deficiency and that can trigger some shedding and some hair loss over time.
As I’ve said, we’ve seen this before. Nutrient deficiencies triggering hair loss, whether it’s bariatric surgery, surgery for weight loss, restrictive diets, or the new skinny shot, Ozempic, can trigger some shedding and some hair loss.
So, if you think you might be at risk for this, or you’re experiencing it yourself, connect with a Strut physician today and get some more information about what you can do about it.
